Assam is endowed with a remarkable variety of soils because of its diverse physiography, heavy monsoonal rainfall, river systems, geological formations and vegetation. The Brahmaputra and Barak valleys contain extensive alluvial soils, while the Himalayan foothills and the hill regions of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao contain piedmont, red and lateritic soils.

The nature of Assam's soils has a direct influence on agriculture, tea cultivation, horticulture, forests, land use and rural livelihoods. The state's soils are generally rich in organic matter and nitrogen, but soil acidity, nutrient deficiencies, flooding and erosion are important limitations in many areas.

The formation and distribution of soils in Assam are closely related to climate, relief, parent material, vegetation, drainage and time. In contrast, the hill regions contain soils developed largely from weathered rocks and older geological formations.

1. Alluvial Soil of Assam

Types of Alluvial Soil

Alluvial soils of Assam can broadly be divided into:

A. New or Young Alluvial Soil

Young alluvial soils occur mainly along the active floodplains, river banks, chars and recently deposited areas.

They are formed from comparatively recent river sediments and may range from sandy and silty materials to loams and finer deposits. Because fresh sediment is periodically added, their characteristics can change from one locality to another.

These soils are particularly important for:

  • Rice cultivation

  • Pulses

  • Mustard and other oilseeds

  • Rabi crops

  • Vegetables

Government sources specifically note that the new alluvial soils of Brahmaputra charlands are suitable for oilseeds, pulses and rabi crops.

B. Old Alluvial Soil

Old alluvial soils occur away from the active river channels and on older alluvial surfaces.

They are generally deeper and more developed than young alluvial soils. Depending on location and drainage, their texture may range from fine to coarse loams, and they are commonly acidic to moderately acidic.

The old alluvial areas are important for rice, vegetables and plantation agriculture, while well-drained acidic soils in Upper Assam are especially associated with plantation development.

The alluvial soils of Assam are important because they support a large part of the state's agricultural economy. Their suitability for cereals, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables and plantation crops makes the Brahmaputra and Barak plains major agricultural regions.


2. Piedmont Soils of Assam

Piedmont soils occur mainly along the Himalayan foothills of northern Assam. These soils are associated with the transition between the foothills and the Brahmaputra Valley.

The piedmont zone includes two important soil environments:

  • Bhabar soils

  • Tarai soils

Bhabar Soil

The Bhabar belt occurs near the Assam-Arunachal foothill region. It consists largely of materials transported from the adjoining mountains, including boulders, pebbles, cobbles, sand and silt.

Because of its coarse material and geomorphic setting, the Bhabar zone differs considerably from the fine-grained alluvial plains farther south. Sources describing Assam's soils identify the Bhabar zone as a narrow piedmont belt associated with the Himalayan foothills.

Tarai Soil

The Tarai belt occurs south of the Bhabar zone in low-lying foothill areas.

Tarai soils are generally associated with high moisture, poor drainage in places and sandy-to-silty loam materials. Wet conditions support grasses and other moisture-loving vegetation.

Thus, the Bhabar and Tarai zones form an important transitional soil belt between the Himalayan foothills and the alluvial plains.


3. Hill Soils of Assam

Hill soils are mainly associated with the hilly and plateau regions of southern and central Assam. Their properties vary according to parent rock, slope, drainage, vegetation and degree of weathering.

The hill soils are commonly described under two important categories:

  • Red sandy soil

  • Red loamy soil

A. Red Sandy Soil

Red sandy soils occur particularly along the Assam-Meghalaya border, the Karbi Plateau, parts of the Barail range and some foothill areas of the Cachar region.

These soils are generally deep and well drained. Their reddish colour is associated with weathering and oxidation of iron-bearing minerals. They are usually acidic and can contain considerable organic matter.

Their agricultural value varies according to location and management. They are important for horticulture, plantation crops and selected upland crops.

B. Red Loamy Soil

Red loamy soils are found in parts of the southern foothill belt, Karbi Plateau, Barail hills and areas adjoining the Assam-Arunachal, Assam-Nagaland and Assam-Mizoram borders.

They generally have a loamy texture ranging from fine to coarse material. These soils are commonly acidic, and their nutrient status varies spatially.

With suitable management, red loamy soils can support horticultural crops, plantation agriculture and selected field crops. The suitability of these soils is strongly influenced by drainage, slope and nutrient availability.


4. Lateritic Soil of Assam

Lateritic soils are associated mainly with the hill and plateau regions, particularly parts of Dima Hasao, southern Karbi Plateau, the eastern margin of Hamren, parts of southern Golaghat and foothill areas near the Barail range.

These soils are strongly weathered and commonly have a dark to reddish appearance. They are generally characterized by relatively low availability of important plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and lime, although the exact condition varies from place to place.

Because of their degree of weathering and nutrient limitations, lateritic soils require careful management for sustained agricultural production.

Major Soil Problems in Assam

Despite considerable soil fertility, Assam faces several soil-related environmental problems.

1. Soil Erosion

Heavy monsoon rainfall, river-bank erosion, floods, deforestation and cultivation on vulnerable slopes can accelerate soil loss.

River erosion is particularly important in the Brahmaputra Valley, where changing channels and high sediment loads continuously modify floodplain landscapes.

2. Soil Acidity

Many soils of Assam are acidic. Strong soil acidity can reduce the availability of certain nutrients and influence crop productivity.

3. Flooding and Waterlogging

Low-lying alluvial areas are frequently affected by floods. Prolonged waterlogging can influence soil aeration, nutrient availability and crop selection.

4. Nutrient Deficiency
